Peru: Trekking the Best of the Cordillera Huayhuash
New for 2008!
The Andes are truly one of the most magnificent mountain ranges of the world, offering so many great trekking opportunities that you could return here year after year without ever tiring of it. Take, for instance, Peru’s remote Cordillera Huayhuash, noted for its concentrated cluster of glaciated spires and sparkling lakes. The peaks of the Huayhuash (pronounced “why wash”) reach heights well above 20,000 feet, but it’s not just the altitude that makes them spectacular, it’s their abrupt rise from the surrounding terrain. Our new trek through this mountain wonderland treats you to a daily drama of snowy giants, including the glacier-covered faces of Yerupajá (21,759'), Jirishanca (20,099'), and other peaks that reach so high to the heavens they seem part of another world. Before the trek, you’ll visit Chavín de Huántar, an archaeological site that rivals Machu Picchu in historical significance, and Huánuco Pampa, the largest Inca ruins outside of Cuzco.
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
- Four-day trek through the most scenic part of the Cordillera Huayhuash, with its glaciated spires and sparkling lakes
- See breathtaking high Andean mountain scenery that rivals the Himalaya in scale
- Visit the rich archaeological sites of Chavín de Huántar and Huánuco Pampa, testaments to Peru’s illustrious past

Itinerary: Trekking the Best of the Cordillera Huayhuash
Day 1 Arrive in Lima, Peru, and drive into the Andes, crossing through Huascarán National Park and into the Konchukos Valley.
Day 2 Morning hike in the uplands of the valley, then visit Chavín de Huántar (10,332'), a site that rivals Machu Picchu in archaeological significance. Three thousand years ago (and long before the Incas), Chavín was one of the main religious and cultural centers of the southern hemisphere. You’ll explore the tunnels, carved heads, and impressive stonework that laid the groundwork for the Inca Empire.
Day 3 Explore Huánuco Pampa, once one of the major settlements of the Incas (nearly 4,000 visible structures remain!).
Day 4 Drive to the trailhead at Queropalca. Begin trek with a hike to the foot of Laguna Carhuacocha, where on a calm day the snowy peaks of Jirishanca and Yerupajá are reflected in the water.
Day 5 Cross a pass at 15,256' and descend to camp at Laguna Mitucocha (14,104') below the peaks of Jirishanca, Rondoy, and others.
Days 6-7 Continue to trek through the Cordillera Huayhuash, crossing two more passes. Campsites are situated beside beautiful lakes surrounded by towering mountains.
Day 8 - Take in the last views of the snowcapped Cordillera Huayhuash while trekking down the Jahuacocha Valley. End trek at Pocta and meet waiting vehicles for the drive to Huaráz.
Day 9 - Drive back to Lima and fly home.
