India: Peaks & Passes of Ladakh
New Trip!
Ladakh, or “Little Tibet,” as it is known, is one of the most remote areas of India, lying to the north of the Himalaya on the Tibetan Plateau. A land of immeasurable vastness, it boasts a dramatic and thoroughly mesmerizing landscape of deep-cut gorges, snowy mountains, and arid open plains. A number of parallel mountain ranges, including the Great Himalayan Range, the Zanskar, and Ladakh ranges, divide this terrain, offering an opulence of 19,000-foot peaks and a maze of excellent trekking routes that usually involve crossing high passes (Ladakh translates literally to “many passes”). Our challenging adventure, with senior MTS trekking guide Sergio Fitch-Watkins, takes you past remote fertile valleys to moonscapes of stark yet evocative beauty, where you’ll trek over high passes marked with fluttering prayer flags, see Buddhism practiced in its purest form, and visit the base camp of Tsomothang Peak, from where you’ll have views of some of the Zanskar Himalaya and Karakoram peaks, including the isolated pinnacle of K2, second in stature only to Mount Everest!
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
- A remote and off-the-beaten-path trek through the high valleys and mountains of Ladakh
- Visit the base camp of the prominent peak of Tsomothang (19,872')
- Enjoy views of the high Himalaya—Nun, Kun, and K2!

Itinerary: Peaks & Passes of Ladakh
Day 1 - Arrive in Delhi, India.
Day 2 - Fly to Leh (11,500'), the capital of Ladakh and once a stop on the Asian Silk Road. Visit the Shey Palace and Thiksey Monastery, both of which boast breathtaking views of the Indus River Valley.
Day 3 - Scenic acclimatization drive to Khardungla (18,360'), enjoying views of the verdant Indus valley against the backdrop of the Stok Mountains and surrounding stark landscape. Return to Leh for lunch. Afternoon to rest or stroll in the Leh bazaar, where many shops sell Ladakhi, Tibetan, and Kashmiri goods.
Day 4 - Drive to Chilling (10,433'), with the option to raft down the Indus River part of the way.
Days 5-17 - Trek past villages marked by mani walls and Buddhist shrines, pastures where shepherds graze their yaks, and meadows of wild alpine flowers. En route, you’ll cross five high passes (the highest is 17,315'), and enjoy stunning panoramas of the snowy peaks of the Zanskar range, including Tsomothang (19,872'), where you’ll hike to the base camp (17,400') used by climbers attempting the peak. Toward the end of the trek you’ll visit the monastery complex of Rangdum Gompa.
